Dear Prospective Instrumentation Engineers,                                                                                                                                                              ISA

The competition due to globalization has resulted in better process control, optimum utilization of resources & higher level of automation in all industry sectors. The demand for automation is increasing day by day. To face these challenges, competent Instrumentation engineers are required.

Instrumentation engineering is the engineering specialization focused on the principle and operation of measuring and control instruments which are used in design and configuration of automated processes. A highly interdisciplinary branch- Instrumentation engineering covers major aspects of chemical, mechanical and electrical and electronics fundamentals. Instrumentation Engineering provides students with sound theoretical and practical knowledge and training in the operation and maintenance of automated process control and measurement instruments used in the production of various commodities. Instrument engineers usually work for design and automation of process industries such as chemical, petrochemical, oil refineries or manufacturing plants-steel, cement, fertilizers, pharmaceutical, etc. with the goal of improving system productivity, reliability, safety, optimization and stability.

Tools required for the automation e.g. DCS, PLC, SCADA, are covered under the curriculum of Instrumentation Engineering. This stream of  engg. includes the detail study electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instrumentation systems as well. Computerized controls are used at a very large scale in process industries, refineries, petrochemical industries and many more. Control and computing are essential features of any modern instrumentation and control system. Therefore Digital Signal Processing, embedded systems and Application Software Practices- MATLAB, Lab View are important areas for design and manufacturing of modern instruments and control systems. Biomedical Instrumentation is also an important subject in instrumentation.  Growing requirement of control and computing has created a large space for “Research in Instrumentation”.

The KGCE  Instrumentation Engg. dept. has well experienced staff members,  and well developed and equipped laboratories as well. Our  dept. boasts of its 100% result  at the Final Year right from the First batch of Konkan Gyanpeeth College of Engineering, Karjat. Moreover, almost every year our students hold University Ranks in Mumbai University.

Process Instrumentation  Lab

1. Process Instrumentation Lab : This is the main lab of our dept., where the study of some major process control instruments /equipments is done. This lab covers mainly the digital and  analog I/O PLCs of Allen Bradley  and Procon companies ,   PC based flow and level process control loop, Ellipse SCADA based  Ratio and Cascade controls and pilot plants set ups,   Differential Pressure Transducer (DPT) Calibration set up , I/P Converter, Control Valve Positioner, Control Valve Sizing set ups,   and  Hydraulic and Pneumatic trainers.

2. Measurement Control Lab:
One section of this lab contains  different types of sensor/transducer  trainer kits which are used in the basic measurement of different process variables such as  temperature, pressure, displacement, vibration, level, flow, strain, force, humidity,  etc. Some important transducers are LVDT, load cell, strain gauge, thermocouple, RTD, thermistors, dead weight tester, diaphragm type pressure transducer, pH meter, vibration sensor are present.   While the second section of this lab comprises   trainer kits that are used in studying basics of feedback control systems. Some  of them are  used to study the open loop and closed  control system response, the steady-state error analysis of  type 0,1,2 systems, the frequency response of closed loop system- Bode plot trainer kit. Latest PC based DC speed motor control set up, stepper motor speed control and torque speed characteristics of AC servo motor setups are also present in this second half of lab.

3. Analytical Instumentation Lab :In this Lab, We have the  most of the Analytical Instruments like Geiger Miller radiation counter tube, Gamma rays spectrometer, Desitometer-205, Double beam UV-VIS spectrometer, Calorimeter, and heart of Analytical Instrumentation i.e. Gas Chromatograph etc. In same lab we have Biomedical equipments like ECG, EMG, EEG, amplifier, Bio signal simulator, heart rate indicator, BP Measurement apparatus, Phonocardiograph,, Plethysmograph, X-ray machine demo setup and etc. and all the types of trainer kits related to Industrial Electronics.

4 Application  Software Practices Lab  : This is our application software based lab. In this lab we have MATLAB 7.0.1, Microsoft Visual Studio 6, National Instruments LabVIEW 2009 student version & 6009 USB Data Acquisition cards, Turbo C++, Microsoft Office. Here we provide facility for the students to help them to understand concepts related to subjects like Digital Signal Processing, Virtual Instrumentation, Application Software Practices-I & II, Feedback Control System, Digital Control System & Control System Engineering.

I wish you all the best to pursue career in under graduate programme- Instrumentation Engineering from our college.
